This ran on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1976, during the second of Steve Sloan's three seasons as Texas Tech's head football coach and five days after fifth-ranked Tech was upset 27-19 by ninth-ranked Houston in a showdown for Southwest Conference leadership.

Tech still had an outside chance at the Cotton Bowl if it beat Arkansas two days later and Rice beat Houston. Tech did its part by beating the Razorbacks 30-7, but Houston won the conference championship with a 42-20 victory over Rice.

Tech ended up playing in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl, where the Raiders lost 27-24 to Nebraska. Incidentally, the cola to which the Aggie referred is Royal Crown Cola, also known as RC Cola.
