Dirk West loved writing the flowery, W.C. Fields-style comments of Moss’ Uncle Upright, who first appeared in 1987. Upright, Moss and the Boo Bird provided Dirk an outlet for comments that might not have worked as well coming from one of the Southwest Conference mascot characters.
This cartoon ran on Aug, 30, 1988, four days before the home opener against the University of North Texas in Spike Dykes’ second season as Texas Tech head coach. UNT was a Division 1-AA team at the time but would upset the Raiders 29-24. Tech would travel to Tucson, Ariz., the following week to play the Arizona Wildcats.
The Red Raider is referring to the University of New Mexico. After playing the Lobos every season from 1971 to 1986, Tech did not play them in 1987 and 1988.
No. 2-ranked Nebraska had beaten No. 10-ranked Texas A&M on Aug. 27. Dirk’s poke at A&M head coach Jackie Sherrill referred to the comical version of Frankenstein’s monster played by actor Fred Gwynne in “The Munsters” TV show from 1964 to 1966.
