Dirk West caricatured every Texas Tech head football coach from JT King to Spike Dykes during the 30 years he drew Tech sports cartoons, but it was very rare that he drew another team’s coach as part of a cartoon.
Darrell Royal, the legendary coach of the Texas Longhorns, received that honor more than once, including this cartoon from Sept. 29, 1972.
The Longhorns, who were 1-0 and ranked in the Top 15, would play Tech, 2-0, in Lubbock the next day and overcome the tenacious Raiders 25-20.
Royal, who coached Texas for 20 years beginning in 1957, customarily wore headphones on the sidelines during games, and Dirk incorporated that in the cartoon.
Both the Red Raider and the Baylor Bear mention having taken Royal’s medicine. Texas had shut out Tech 28-0 and Baylor 24-0 the previous season in Austin.
Texas would go on to beat Alabama in the Cotton Bowl and finish No. 3 in the nation in the Associated Press poll.
Tech finished with an 8-3 regular season record and a Sun Bowl berth, where they lost 32-28 to North Carolina.
