Dirk West was a huge fan of “Tonight Show” host Johnny Carson and considered him one of the best comedians in show business.
Following his nightly monologue, Carson often sat behind his desk and presented short bits of material that involved such things as humorous lists. Dirk’s list of sayings from football coaches here was along the lines of Carson’s style of humor and likely was partially inspired by it.
This cartoon was published on Oct. 15, 1983, the day Texas Tech hosted Rice in a homecoming game. The Red Raiders were 2-2. The two holes in the Raider’s hat represented losses to Air Force and New Mexico, but Tech had defeated Baylor and Texas A&M and was 2-0 in conference play.
